this love is growing / bright / ours

LGBTQIA+ and Indigenous Awareness Artwork for Info-Tech Research Group and McLean & Company, 2021

“this love is growing / bright / ours” (2021) is an artwork created in ink, pencil crayon, and digital illustrations, funded by Info-Tech Research Group and McLean & Company to celebrate 2SLGBTQ+ & Indigenous Awareness. A portion of the budget for this project provided to the artist will be donated directly to Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals seeking financial support.

This piece of artwork playfully embodies growth and exploration through fluid colourful marks of bright yellows, reds, blues, and greens, accompanied by handwritten text, imagery resembling leaves, trees, dandelions, and grass, as well as symbols of gender non-conforming identities. At the top of the image, handwritten text reads “my queerness is something born in a gay club, it is something in me that i cannot locate”. Left from the middle of the image, there is a symbol for Two Spirit, an identity of Indigenous peoples’, specifically those who identify with both a male and female spirit within them. In the middle, bottom left, and right of the image are black and white rainbows, a common symbol of queerness in Monica’s work. Throughout the image lines weave together to signify hair, a landscape, and stars.
